Opera switching rendering engine to WebKit

Opera press release:

To provide a leading browser on Android and iOS, this year Opera will make a gradual transition to the WebKit engine, as well as Chromium, for most of its upcoming versions of browsers for smartphones and computers.

This is great news and means one less rendering engine to worry about when designing for the web.

WebKit already has over 40% of the browser rendering engine market share and adding 300 million Opera users is going to really push WebKit towards being used in 50% of all browser traffic. It’ll be interesting to see what contributions the guys at Opera will have to the both the WebKit and Chromium projects.
