Rolling Stone reporting that Target aren’t too happy that Beyoncé’s new album had a digital release before a physical one:
“At Target we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, and when a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections,” Target spokeswoman Erica Julkowski said.
So Target is going to focus on offering a wide assortment of physical CDs by deliberately not carrying what will likely be a very popular album over the holiday period?
Target seem to be under the misguided impression that it is a large enough retail force that it can somehow threaten album sales and take on music distributors by taking this position. But with the holidays just around the corner and the most popular gifts to be devices capable of streaming or downloading music, the last thing a company selling physical albums should do is choose not to stock one of the season’s most popular albums.
This isn’t bringing a knife to a gun fight, this is bringing a teaspoon to a tactical nuclear strike.
